ABSTRACT
Endodontic treatment is undertaken in order
to preserve a tooth, relieve the patient’s pain and
protect periapical tissues from inflammation.
Due to frequently severe loss of tooth structure,
endodontic therapy should usually go in tandem
with prosthetic rehabilitation. However, it is still
undetermined what type of prosthetic restoration
is optimal for endodontically treated teeth. Before
selecting the appropriate restoration clinicians
should take into account both patient- and toothrelated
issues. Additionally, there are various
opinions regarding the success of prosthetic
treatment depending on the vitality of abutment
teeth. Another issue being debated is whether
it is necessary to perform root canal treatment
prior to placing a prosthetic restoration. This
literature review aims to summarize available
data on the reconstruction of lost dental tissues
with the support of endodontically treated
teeth. Furthermore, the authors of the article
will attempt to determine how endodontically
treated teeth perform as abutments for prosthetic
restorations compared to vital teeth.
