ABSTRACT
The term “odontoma” was introduced in the
second half of the 19th century by Paul Broca.
Broca defined it as a tumour resulting from the
overgrowth of transitional or complete dental
tissue. Odontomas are classified as developmental
anomalies rather than true neoplasms. These
benign lesions develop from epithelial and
mesenchymal elements of the dental apparatus
and are composed of enamel, dentine, cementum
and pulp. As they rarely cause symptoms,
they are chance findings typically detected on
radiographs.
The exact aetiology of odontomas remains
unclear. However, some studies suggest that
they may develop following local trauma,
inflammation, or chronic infections occurring
during odontogenesis. Odontogenic tumours
have a reported prevalence of 0.002–0.1%, with
compound odontomas being the most frequently
diagnosed type. This condition is relatively rare and is often associated with impacted teeth.
Accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment
help minimize the risk of complications. The
treatment of choice is the surgical removal of the
lesion.
The aim of this study was to assess the
diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for tooth
impaction associated with an odontoma.
