ABSTRACT
Epulides are exophytic, tumor-like proliferative lesions of a non-neoplastic nature that frequently occur within the soft tissues of the oral cavity. Their classification is heterogeneous. They are currently categorized into inflammatory, fibrous, and giant cell types. Their etiology is multifactorial, arising from the hyperplastic proliferation of connective tissue in the gingiva, periodontal ligament, or periosteum. Numerous factors, both local and systemic, contribute to their formation. Epulides are most commonly detected in women, primarily in the maxilla, during the third and fourth decades of life. These lesions may have a recurrent nature, undergo malignant transformation , or mimic other pathological lesions. Therefore, conducting appropriate differential diagnosis is crucial. The treatment of epulides, regardless of their type, involves eliminating the causative factor and surgically excising the lesion with a margin of healthy tissue. This study presents a case of the diagnosis and surgical treatment of a recurrent fibrous epulis that recurred twice, located lingually to the anterior mandibular teeth in a 66-year-old female patient. The authors of the article aim to emphasize the multifactorial etiology of epulides, their tendency to recur, and the potential risk of neoplastic transformation.
