ABSTRACT
Bruxism is one of the least known dysfunctions of the stomatognathic system. Bruxism decreases significantly the rate of success not only in a perspective prosthetic treatment, but also in restorative dentistry, periodontics or even surgical procedures. Presently, theories pertaining to bruxism evolve around the impulses coming from the central nervous system, which in turn cause a temporary nocturnal tachycardia, followed by a bilateral contraction of the masseter muscles. However, the multifactoral and complex aetiology of bruxism still requires further consideration and research.
